Expeditions

Dr. Craig O’Connell has explored the globe and has not only interacted with wildlife, but has made international partnerships and friendships.  Through these relationships, Craig has been lucky enough to be shown some of the most unique and isolated locations on the planet.  With Craig’s mentality being focused on education through research, adventure, and exploration, Craig would like to take you to several locations and give you an experience of a lifetime.

Bimini, Bahamas

For nearly two decades, Craig has returned to Bimini — not once or twice, but over 55 times — drawn back by the island’s unmatched beauty and its wild, awe-inspiring marine life. On these expeditions, he has shared the water in peaceful harmony with Atlantic spotted dolphins, towering great hammerhead sharks, sleek Caribbean reef sharks, formidable bull sharks, and many more ocean giants.

Now, it’s your turn to experience the magic.

You’ll be based at the legendary Bimini Big Game Club on North Bimini, Bahamas, and diving with the expert team at Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center — a partnership built on excellence, safety, and adventure.

This isn’t your average getaway. Over six unforgettable days and five nights, you’ll embark on a journey packed with once-in-a-lifetime encounters:

  • Dive (or snorkel) with majestic great hammerhead sharks in their winter aggregation grounds
  • Cage dive with powerful bull sharks, just feet away from your face
  • Hand-feed gentle southern stingrays in the impossibly clear waters of Honeymoon Harbor
  • And unwind on remote beaches where it feels like time — and the rest of the world — simply vanish

This is more than a trip. It’s an expedition into the wild soul of the ocean — guided by someone who knows its every heartbeat.

Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica

Where the rainforest meets raw, untamed adventure.

Craig has spent over eight months living deep in rainforests around the globe, navigating the wild alongside pumas, massive crocodiles, and tarantulas the size of dinner plates. This is no ordinary travel tale — it’s survival, science, and soul all wrapped into one.

Now, he invites you to join him in one of the most biodiverse places on Earth: the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica.

Your journey begins with a scenic flight over jungle canopies and coastline, but first — a heart-pounding stop at the Tarcoles River, home to some of the largest American crocodiles on the planet. Then, it’s off to your home base: a jungle resort unlike anything you’ve ever seen. If you’ve watched the show Lost, you’ve only scratched the surface of the visual wonder this place offers.

You’ll sleep in elevated “tree tents”, nestled in the rainforest canopy where howler monkeys become your morning alarm and scarlet macaws soar at eye level. For six days and five nights, you’ll dive headfirst into adventure:

  • Trek through dense jungle on intense and rewarding hikes
  • Embark on night safaris to encounter creatures that only come alive after dark
  • Learn about the rainforest’s delicate ecosystem through hands-on educational experiences
  • And soak it all in from a hammock strung between palm trees, with nothing but the sounds of the surf and the calls of the wild around you

This isn’t just a trip — it’s a full-sensory immersion into one of the most vibrant, alive, and remote regions on the planet. And it’s calling your name.

Malapascua Island, Philippines

For the past 5+ years, Dr. Craig O’Connell has returned again and again to this remote island paradise, forging a close partnership with the renowned team at Thresher Shark Divers. Why? Because Malapascua is one of the only places on Earth where you can consistently come face to face with the mysterious pelagic thresher shark.

On this one-of-a-kind expedition, you’ll rise before dawn and venture to Kimud Shoal — a submerged coral-covered seamount in the open ocean. As the sun rises, so do the threshers, gliding silently out of the deep blue to visit cleaning stations atop the reef. With their massive tails, alien-like eyes, and graceful movements, these animals will leave you breathless.

And if there’s ever a moment when the sharks drift away? You’ll still be surrounded by a kaleidoscope of reef life — octopuses, swirling schools of fish, and unexpected underwater marvels.

But the adventure doesn’t stop there.

Over six days and five nights, you’ll explore:

  • The Sea Snake Sanctuary, home to one of the densest populations of banded sea kraits in the world
  • Gato Island, a stunning marine reserve teeming with life and hidden swim-throughs
  • Unique muck diving sites, where you’ll hunt (with your camera!) for nudibranchs, cuttlefish, squid, and bizarre bottom dwellers hiding in the sand
  • And to top it all off: incredible close encounters with whale sharks, the largest fish in the sea

This is not just a diving trip. It’s an expedition to a remote island that will change the way you see the ocean — led by someone who’s built his life around protecting its most extraordinary inhabitants.
