RESEARCH

At the Montauk Shark Lab, we conduct cutting-edge shark and marine-related research using technologies like BRUVS, satellite and acoustic tags, FinCams, among many others to uncover the ecological and biological characteristics of a variety of local shark species. Our findings directly support conservation efforts by informing better management and protection strategies. Committed to innovation, our team also invents new technologies to reduce shark bycatch and replace harmful practices such as shark nets and drumlines.

EDUCATION

Educating youth about marine life equips them with the knowledge and appreciation needed to understand the intricacies and beauty of the natural world—and at the Montauk Shark Lab, we foster this awareness to empower the next generation to protect and preserve our oceans for generations to come.  Through our thriving summer program known as Shark Camp, we educate high school students with a hands-on, week-long experience alongside shark researchers, engaging in all aspects of shark biology and conservation. Additionally, Montauk Shark Lab serves as a hub for community outreach, where we educate local residents and visitors about Montauk’s marine wildlife to help foster a strong conservation ethic.

COLLABORATION

At the Montauk Shark Lab, collaboration is a cornerstone of our mission. Dr. Craig O’Connell firmly believes in building mutually beneficial partnerships—especially with local and global fishing communities, who are among the most knowledgeable stewards of the sea. By working closely with fishermen, we gain invaluable insights into the health of our natural resources and explore opportunities for research and innovation that can reduce bycatch, support sustainable practices, and help assess and protect vulnerable marine populations.

SUPPORT OUR MISSION

The Montauk Shark Lab operates year-round, whether it is at our on-site facility, visiting various K-12 facilities, or developing conservation-oriented projects.  In order for us to continue our efforts, we largely depend on donations.  These donations help support our facility, feed our animals, conduct innovative research, cover tagging expenses (e.g. tags, gear, fuel), fund M.Sc. projects, and contribute to the conservation of our marine resources.

Since we are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, all contributions are tax deductible as appropriate by law.
