Operated by the team at O’Seas Conservation Foundation, the Montauk Shark Lab was established in 2025 and is a state-of-the-art public marine education and research facility located in the heart of Montauk. More specifically, it is located at Montauk Anglers Club (467 E Lake Dr), right across from the Gin Beach Cafe.
Our lab features five dynamic aquarium systems, including two large, interactive touch tanks — and we’re open to the public!
For just a $5 suggested donation per person, you can explore the lab, get hands-on with marine life in our touch tanks, and learn about the incredible creatures that call Montauk’s waters home.
Other Highlights:
A massive shark jaw display with facts about local shark species
Exhibits showcasing tagging technologies used in shark research
American eels and green crabs in specialized tanks
Public microscopes for up-close exploration of marine life
Insights into the diverse ecosystems around Montauk
Touch Tank 1: Cold-Water Wonders
Home to five subadult chain catsharks and two pups, a local deep-water species, this chilled touch tank also contains a variety of fascinating local invertebrates. Keep your eyes peeled — can you spot them all?
Touch Tank 2: Local Species Showcase
This larger tank houses smooth dogfish sharks, stingrays, sea stars, horseshoe crabs, sea urchins and other coastal critters, and other coastal critters.
Tank 3: Ocean Futures Tank
This smaller tank allows you to peak into the unique life-history characteristics of the chain catsharks where you can see developing chain catshark eggs. But amongst these eggs is another surprise – see if you can find our resident seahorses hiding among the plants!
